West Oahu VEX Robotics Tournament

On December 18th, 2021, VEX EDR Teams 359A and 359B Competed at the West Oahu VEX Robotics Tournament hosted at Nanakuli High and Intermediate School. Twenty-four teams competed in this event. Upon arrival at the venue, our teams worked on preparing the robot for inspection, tested and practiced on the fields, and talked to our alliance partners about upcoming matches. Throughout the day, both Team 359A and 359B competed in a total of seven qualification matches. At the end of the qualification matches, Team 359A ranked 3rd place with a record of 6-1-0 (Win-Lose-Tie) and Team 359B ranked 4th with a record of 6-1-0 (Win-Lose-Tie). Upon completion of the qualification matches, our teams talked to other teams to plan for alliance selections. During the alliance selections, Team 359A was captain of the second-seed alliance and partnered with Team 42700B, Crusaders B. Team 359B was captain of the third-seed alliance and partnered with Team 4142A, Pearl City High School. Upon completion of alliance selections, our teams were hard at work to prepare for their upcoming matches. During the elimination matches, Team 359A and Team 359B, along with their alliance partners faced off in the Semi-Finals where Team 359A and Team 42700B won their match with a score of 158 to 84, eliminating Team 359B and Team 4142A from the tournament. During the Finals, Team 359A and Team 42700B played against the first-seed alliance, which included Team 4142B, from Pearl City High School, and Team 2437A, Lancer Robotics. At the end of the match, Team 359A and their alliance partner 42700B win their match against the first-seed alliance with a score of 156 to 73, earning the alliance the Tournament Champions Awards. In addition to the Tournament Champions Award, Team 359A earned the Design Award. Both awards qualified Team 359A for a spot in the 2022 Hawaii VRC State Championship that will take place in February! 

East Big Island VEX Robotics Tournament

On December 11th, 2021, VEX EDR Teams 359A and 359C woke up early in the morning and traveled to Hilo, Hawai’i to compete at the Big Island East VRC Tournament hosted at Waiakea High School. Fourteen teams competed in this event with ten teams from the Big Island and four teams from Oahu, where our program along with Saint Louis Schools entered two teams each. Upon arrival to Hilo, our team bought breakfast and went straights to the tournament venue to check in, set up the pit area, and prepare the robot for the competition. Throughout the day, both Teams 359A and 359C competed in a total of six qualification matches. At the end of the qualification matches, team 359C ranked 4th place with a record of 4-2-0 (Win-Lose-Tie) and Team 359A ranked 10th with a record of 2-4-0. Upon competition of the qualification matches, our team talked to other teams to discuss plans for alliance selections. During the alliance selections, Team 5968Y, Cougar Tech from Kea’au Hawai’i invited Team 359C to join their alliance where they graciously accepted their offer, making them the 2nd seed alliance. In addition, Team 1869B, RoboJoeB, from Hilo, Hawai’i invired Team 359A to join their alliance, making them the 5th seed alliance. Upon completion of alliance selections, our teams prepared to compete in Robot Skills Challenges where Team 359A ranked 3rd, with a score of 140 for Driver Skills and 100 for Programming Skills, totaling 240 points! This put Team 359A in 10th place for skills in the State of Hawai’i. As the time to compete in Robot Skills matches came to an end, both teams prepared to compete in elimination matches with their alliance. During elimination matches, Team 359A and their alliance captain, Team 1869B played in Quarterfinals Match #1 where they won with a score of 87 to 40, advancing the alliance to the Semi-Finals. During the Semi-Finals, Team 359A and 1869B played against the first seed alliance and lost. Team 359C and 5968Y also competed in the Semi-Finals, playing against the 4th seed alliance and losing with a final score of 103 to 123. Although both teams were eliminated during the Semi-Finals, both teams learned a lot and knew what needed to be improved by the next tournament as this was Team 359A’s first event of the season, and Team 359C’s second event. 

Pearl City High School VEX Robotics Tournament

On December 4th, 2021, Team 359B and 359 competed in the VRC Pearl City Tournament. Teams from all over Hawaii competed in this tournament with a total of 24 teams including our two own teams. During the event our teams set up the pit, inspected and tested the robot, prepared our Engineering Notebook to turn in, and scheduled a judges interview. As the teams prepared for qualification matches, they scouted, talking to other teams and creating game strategies for Matches while gaining a better understanding of their alliances’ robots and autonomous programs. During the qualification matches, Teams 359B and 359C competed in a total of 42 matches and upon completion of the qualification matches, Both teams began scouting out teams for possible alliances. During the alliance selections, Team 359C invited Team 2459B, Golden Hawks Robotics, to forge an alliance. Later Team 12033P, Manoa Tech 33, invited Team 359B where they graciously accepted their offer. During the Round of 16, Team 359 and Team 12033P won their match with a score of 86 to 66, qualifying them for the Quarter-Finals. Team 359B and 12033P lost their next match with a score of 135 to 0, eliminating them from the competition. Team 359C and Team 2459B lost their Quarter-Finals match and were eliminated from the competition.  During the tournament, our teams tackled many unexpected obstacles but managed to complete the tournament in 5th and 16th place out of 24 teams. 359B had a record of 3-4-0 (Win-Lose-Tie) and 359C had a record of 4-3-0. Although neither of our teams won the tournament, they tried their best and learned a lot while competing with other teams and observing various robot designs. The tournament gave our new VEX students a chance to experience a new environment and learn what to expect in upcoming tournaments.
