SAN DIEGO REGIONAL
MARCH 2024
The 2024 San Diego Regional took place at the University of California, San Diego and was our second regional of the season! We had the opportunity to participate in an exhilarating competition with 51 teams representing diverse locales spanning the California region, Hawaii, and even Azerbaijan!
LOAD IN & PRACTICE DAY
Before loading in, FRC Team 1538, The Holy Cows, graciously invited us to refine our robot and practice our skills in their hangar. The next day, the venue opened for teams to get inspected and engage in practice matches. These invaluable scrimmages afforded us the opportunity to scout potential alliances and fine-tune our robot's performance for the upcoming competition. Additionally, we demonstrated our spirit of aloha by distributing omiyage to all participating teams, fostering camaraderie and spreading aloha throughout the tournament.
QUALIFICATION ROUNDS
The qualification matches began on the second day of competition, where teams engaged in fierce competition to bolster their rankings. Beyond the victories in individual matches, we gained important lessons through collaborating with our alliances and learning from their skill sets. Our relentless dedication and tireless efforts paid off as we ranked first, following the conclusion of qualification matches. Remarkably, our team emerged as the only undefeated team, with 9 wins, 0 losses, and 0 ties. During practice matches, one of our crucial camera mounts had broken off, and without a spare we turned to creating a temporary solution to make sure our bot could continue running.
ALLIANCE STRATEGY
As we approach the upcoming competitions, we reflect with pride on our achievements across the past two regional events and look forward to the next two regionals our team will be competing in. Following the conclusion of our latest regional, our undefeated streak stands firm at an impressive 30 wins, 0 losses, and 1 tie. With just two more regional competitions remaining before the highly anticipated World Championships, our team remains steadfast in its pursuit of continual growth and enhancement. We extend heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated mentors whose unwavering support has been instrumental in our journey. Moreover, we express sincere appreciation to the remarkable teams with whom we had the privilege of competing alongside during the 2024 San Diego Regional.
REFLECTION
Our diligent scouts meticulously recorded observations on each participating robot, ensuring we made informed decisions in selecting the most compatible alliance for the playoffs. With careful consideration, we extended invitations to FRC Team 3647, Millennium Falcons, and FRC Team 8891, Wild Raccoons, to join forces as part of the 1st seed alliance. We decided on 3647 as both of our autos worked well together, scoring over 30 points during the autonomous period. Collaborating actively with Team 3647, we diligently refined our alliance strategy throughout the playoffs, a decision that yielded remarkable results as evidenced by our attainment of the highest competition score, an impressive 137 points! We also developed a defensive approach and added a blocker on Team 8891 to prevent our opponents from scoring notes, which proved successful. We ended the tournament as Regional Winners and secured the Team Sustainability Award, celebrating our long-term impact on our community and the environment.
