WORKSHOPS

Thundering Tanx

In 2017, Chinese Rookie team 6439, Team Tanx, as well as Australian team 3132, Thunder Down Under, visited our facilities. While team 3132 was mainly here for a tour, team 6439 was here for the workshop, similar to the one that we held the previous year for two other rookie Chinese teams.

The team would get an explanation on how to be successful as a FIRST team, experience a bit of the community, and mingle amongst our team members creating strong bonds. That same week, the Hawaii Regional took place and team 6439 attained the highest seed as a rookie team as well as taking home the Rookie Inspiration Award.

Tournament Planning

Our NS VEX tournament was such a massive success, it got the attention of other event coordinators across the island and neighboring islands. So much so that they wanted to learn how we were able to be so successful in our event planning. Led by our Tournament Coordinator Cody Miyataki, he went through everything from initial planning phases, getting volunteers, coordinating software, media and AV, to setup and teardown.

We are greatful to give back to the community with this information to help make our fellow VEX tournaments be the best they can be.

Team 359 X CURYA

In 2016, the week of the Hawaii Regional, we hosted two different Rookie Chinese Teams at our school for a basic workshop on how to become successful in FIRST.

Team 6909 x 359 exchange

Last year we engaged with virtual exchanges with 6909 and got to compete with them at the Hawaii Regional. We were excited to hear that when we reached out to them about our trip to Tokyo Team 6909, Sakura was kind enough to show us around their host sponsor Chiba Institute of Technology, and their exhibit located at the Tokyo Skytree Town Campus, on the 8th floor. They showed us how they played their part during the 2012 earthquake with the Disaster Response Robot Rescue Simulator. We were also shown many other amazing things like the space mission they were doing, AI recognizing flowers, fireworks displays, and the effort that went into it. We were so inspired!

Thank you to Team 6909, Sakura Tempesta!

Japan Technology and Culture Exhibit

We learned about how the iconic cup noodle became what it is today. And how the iconic cup wouldn't have come to fruition without Momofuku observing Americans and striving to create solutions to problems. A highlight of technology we saw in Japan was in team labs. The LED lights and reflective walls seem simple in concept but the result is magical. It makes us think about how far our program can go and strive for in terms of technology. We were able to go to several different cultural and technology museums and see the daily lives of modern Japanese people. We were happy to see things that were familiar to us, too, and to learn about the similarities and differences in culture and customs.

“Seeing the culture and technology there was an eye-opening experience. Seeing how people live life in other places and how it's so different from us in Hawaii” -Lum M.
