HALEIWA JODO MISSION

JULY 2024

On July 22 & 23, 2023, Team 359 attended the Haleiwa Bon Dance, an annual cultural event that takes place at the Haleiwa Jodo Mission.

SERVING FOOD

The students worked hard in the food booths, as they were in charge of taking orders, handling money, and making teri beef buns. The booths sold a variety of different items, such as bentos, sushi, hot dogs, burgers, andagi, and ice cakes. Many festival attendees ate while taking in the colorful sights and sounds of the dancers and taiko drummers. Team 359's efforts and dedication allowed everyone to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and share in the rich cultural experience that the Bon Dance provides.

OBON (BON DANCE)

On the second day, students continued working in the food booths, providing meals for the many participants at the Bon Dance. The lantern festival began at 8pm, attracting visitors from all over the island as they came together to honor their loved ones who had passed. 359 students and alumni carried the lanterns down to Hale’iwa Beach Park and aided the community in releasing their lanterns out into the ocean. The lanterns are meant to represent lights to guide souls on their way towards the cemetery from family members who light a small fire during the evening.

VOLUNTEERING

Once the students arrived, they were assigned to their respective responsibilities. Some students were in charge of directing traffic while others worked in the food booths.

FLOATING LANTERNS

Obon is a Japanese Buddhist custom that commemorates one's ancestors. According to Buddhist belief, during this time, ancestral spirits return to visit their families. The festival features lively Bon dancing, which expresses gratitude and welcomes the spirits. The community is truly grateful for Team 359's hard work and commitment to preserving and promoting the cherished traditions that make our community unique.
