VENTURA COUNTY REGIONAL

MARCH 2023

For week 2, The Hawaiian Kids traveled to Ventura, California, for the Ventura County Regional hosted at Port Hueneme. The competition took place from March 10-12th, and students were ready for the competition!

HAWAIIAN HELPERS

Over the course of the tournament, The Hawaiian Kids offered our assistance to FRC teams in need. Working with teams to repair or improve electrical, software, or mechanical mechanisms with their robot. We worked with a total of 25 teams, not only working with teams to improve their robot but also other aspects of their team! We continued to spread our aloha to teams by giving teams chocolate macadamia nuts from Hawaii!

ALLIANCE SELECTION

The Hawaiian Kids started qualifications strong with a win! Our team competed in a total of 9 matches alongside 46 teams. Once qualification matches ended 3rd with a score of 7-2-0 (Win-Lose-Tie). Our team had many ups and downs throughout qualifications, losing two matches and dropping our rank making the challenge of winning a lot harder. Qualification matches ended and our scouts worked together to create a pick list for the best possible alliance.

STARTING WEEK TWO

Students set-up the pit in preparation for practice day whilst scouts arranged scouting sheets for the next day. Once practice day began, our drive team worked with the robot on the practice field and practice matches. Our scouts worked together to visit and interview teams at their pits to discuss potential teammates.

PERSISTENCE

Upon ending qualification matches, our scouters then began analyzing their data from every match. Scouters then completed a list of rankings for all of the teams for possible alliances. The Hawaiian Kids decided to align with teams 4613, Barker Redbacks, and 244, RobotDawgs 3D, for the upcoming playoff matches. After Alliance Selections, teams gathered with their alliance partners and prepared for playoffs.

COMPETITION FINALS

The Hawaiian Kids dropped to the lower bracket going against the 8th seed alliance. The winner of the lower bracket finals would go on to face the first seed alliance in the finals. Team 359 won the match with a score of 128-91. The second seed alliance continued onto the final matches, going against the first seed alliance once again. Although, due to mechanical issues, our alliance had to take a backup robot in place of our second pick, Team 1836, The MilkenKnights. Despite trying our best, our alliance lost both rounds and ended the tournament as finalists.

ADVANCING TO PLAY-OFFS

As the second alliance, The Hawaiian Kids pushed through not losing a single round until play-offs round 4. Going against the first seed alliance was a challenge, but our students were determined to do their best! Unfortunately, our teams were beaten and were dropped down into the lower bracket.

AWARDS

Despite ending the Ventura County Regional as finalists alongside our incredible teammates. Our students worked harder than ever and made it to the finals against the first seed alliance. Not only did we finish the competition as finalists, but also won the Excellence in Engineering Award for our well designed robot mechanisms toward the game challenges! We are excited to continue this season at our next tournament at the Stan Sheriff Center for Hawaii Regionals alongside other teams from across the state!
