VRC BIG ISLAND
NOVEMBER 2022
On November 19th, VEX VRC Teams 359B, 359C, 3590A, and 3590B competed at the 2022 Big Island VEX VRC Tournament hosted at Saint Joseph High School in Hilo, Hawaii.
LOAD IN
Teams woke up early and loaded their robots before heading to Saint Joseph High School and setting up their pit. Students quickly prepared for inspection and began practicing with their robots. Once the qualification match schedule was released, Team 359 quickly strategized with their qualification teammates while scouts took their place to prepare for matches.
AWARDS
Despite our teams losing in the semifinals and finals, we are so glad to have had the opportunity to travel to Hilo, Hawaii and adventure around another Hawaiian Island! New students learned a lot about traveling in robotics and throughout the competition. Team 359B won the Innovate award along with Team 359C who won the Think award. We are so excited to see these teams again at other VRC Events and will continue to do our best!
ALLIANCE SELECTIONS
This tournament was much smaller than our previous, with only 19 teams competing including our own! Teams competed in 6 qualification matches where each team was met with many challenges throughout matches. Although, with students’ determination, teams were able to finish qualifications within the top 10! Team 359B finished in 2nd with a perfect score of 6-0-0 (Win-Lose-Tie)! Team 359C followed in 3rd only losing 1 match with a score of 5-1-0. Team 3590B and Team 3590A ranked 9th and 10th, both with a score of 3-3-0.
FLYING IN
Team 359 flew in a day before the tournament where students were able to explore Hilo before heading to the hotel and preparing their robots for the tournament the next day. Students went to bed early to get lots of sleep to make sure they are ready for the VEX Big Island Competition!
PUSHING THROUGH
Qualifications have ended which means alliance selection is soon to begin. Students quickly work with their scouts to discuss team alliances. With lots of thinking and alliance selection approaching, students discuss with their team and end alliance selection with teams ready for finals! Team 359B aligned with Team 359C while Team 3590B aligned with Team 3590A making an alliance between the Waialua high school students and the Waialua middle school students!
FINALS
With alliance selection completed, teams go to discuss with their alliances on strategies on how they want to play against their opponents. Lucky both Waialua alliances won their quarterfinal matches, bringing them into the semifinals where they both faced off against fellow Oahu teams 42700A and 42700D Crusaders from St. Louis High School. Teams 3590A and 3590B lost their match and were eliminated from the competition. Teams 359B and 359C won their match and moved onto the finals! Unfortunately Waialua lost in the finals by 29 points, eliminating them and completing another competition as tournament finalist!
