LAS VEGAS REGIONAL

APRIL 2023

The Hawaiian Kids attended the Las Vegas Regional alongside teams from across the country during Week 5! As our last regional event of the season, we were ready to face off against teams!

“BEHIND THE BUMPERS”

On Practice Day, we were honored to be interviewed by Tyler Olds for the FIRST Updates Now’s “Behind the Bumpers” series. Our students showcased Poi Pounder XXIV, explaining our design process and discussing our robot’s performance throughout this 2022-2023 competition season.

COLLECTING DATA

Once the match schedule was released, our scouters began by reviewing the data to assign each student a team to watch during each match. Meanwhile, our drive team prepared our robot for the up and coming qualification matches. The Hawaiian Kids were charged up and ready to compete with teams from across the country! We faced many challenges throughout the tournament including software and mechanical issues along with some close matches! Through all our hard work, we were able to place 2nd!

LOAD IN

After a quick two-day turnaround following the Hawaii Regional, The Hawaiian Kids made the 6-hour flight to compete in the 2023 Las Vegas Regional! Students prepared the pit to compete in our fourth and final Regional Event!

BEGINNING MATCHES

Throughout the entire duration of the competition, our scouting students painstakingly collected data on all participating teams. They visited teams in their pit, meeting new friends and learning about each team’s robot design and game strategies. During matches, they collected data that would allow them to determine which robots would be most compatible with Poi Pounder XXIV. By the end of Qualification Matches, they had organized their data and created a Pick List of potential partners for Alliance Selections.

ALLIANCE SELECTION

As Qualification Matches came to a close, Team 359 ranked 2nd out of 44 teams with a record of 10-2-0 (Win-Lose-Tie) and average ranking score of 3.25, allowing us to be Captains of the 2nd Seed Alliance. During Alliance Selections, Team 4270 Crusaders invited us to join the 1st Seed Alliance. After comparing scouting data, both teams agreed to invite Team 9287, Bonanza High School onto our alliance.

FINAL MATCHES

Once getting past the semifinals, we once again faced off against the second seed alliance. Although, this time our teams were prepared and won two out of the three rounds needed, declaring us the tournament champions!

READY FOR PLAY-OFFS

As the first alliance, we quickly prepared the robot for the first playoffs match alongside our alliance partners! Our teams ended up winning every match up until the semi-finals where we lost to the second seed alliance dropping us down into the lower bracket where we had to face off against the 6th seed alliance.

AWARDS

As our final regional event, we were awarded as the tournament champions! This year we won 3 out of the 4 regional events we attended and placed finalists! We are so excited for championships and can not wait to compete alongside amazing teams!
