VRC EAST BIG ISLAND


DECEMBER 2021

On December 11th, 2021, VEX EDR Teams 359A and 359C woke up early in the morning and traveled to Hilo, Hawai’i to compete at the Big Island East VRC Tournament hosted at Waiakea High School.



HIGHLIGHTS

One standout moment of team collaboration occurred during Qualification Match 11, when Team 3590B had the opportunity to partner with Team 27301A (RoboBots). Through effective communication and collaboration, the two teams worked seamlessly together and achieved the highest score of the entire competition - a remarkable 180 points compared to their opponents' 52 points. This impressive result is a testament to the strong teamwork and cooperative spirit demonstrated by both teams.



FINALS AND TOURNAMENT RESULTS

Our team talked to other teams to discuss plans for alliance selections. During the alliance selections, Team 5968Y, Cougar Tech from Kea’au Hawai’i invited Team 359C to join their alliance where they graciously accepted their offer, making them the 2nd seed alliance. In addition, Team 1869B, RoboJoeB, from Hilo, Hawai’i invired Team 359A to join their alliance, making them the 5th seed alliance.



INTENSE MATCHES

Fourteen teams competed in this event with ten teams from the Big Island and four teams from Oahu, where our program along with Saint Louis Schools entered two teams each. Upon arrival to Hilo, our team bought breakfast and went straights to the tournament venue to check in, set up the pit area, and prepare the robot for the competition. Throughout the day, both Teams 359A and 359C competed in a total of six qualification matches. At the end of the qualification matches, team 359C ranked 4th place with a record of 4-2-0 (Win-Lose-Tie) and Team 359A ranked 10th with a record of 2-4-0.



ALLIANCE SELECTIONS

Upon completion of alliance selections, our teams prepared to compete in Robot Skills Challenges where Team 359A ranked 3rd, with a score of 140 for Driver Skills and 100 for Programming Skills, totaling 240 points! This put Team 359A in 10th place for skills in the State of Hawai’i. As the time to compete in Robot Skills matches came to an end, both teams prepared to compete in elimination matches with their alliance. During elimination matches, Team 359A and their alliance captain, Team 1869B played in Quarterfinals Match #1 where they won with a score of 87 to 40, advancing the alliance to the Semi-Finals. During the Semi-Finals, Team 359A and 1869B played against the first seed alliance and lost. Team 359C and 5968Y also competed in the Semi-Finals, playing against the 4th seed alliance and losing with a final score of 103 to 123. Although both teams were eliminated during the Semi-Finals, both teams learned a lot and knew what needed to be improved by the next tournament as this was Team 359A’s first event of the season, and Team 359C’s second event.
